Dan Burt – Award Winning Artist
“Inspiration comes as a result of painting, instead of the other way around.” – Dan Burt
An award winning artist, Dan, paints in Texas, Mexico, Italy and Spain using primarily transparent watercolor. Born in 1930 in Owensboro, Kentucky, he studied at the Ramon Froman School of Art in Cloudcroft, New Mexico and the Simon Michael School of Art in Rockport, Texas. He is active in numerous watercolor societies and exhibitions and currently lives in Kerrville, Texas.
Working with as many as ten or eleven separate puddles of dissolved pigments, Dan paints each watercolor using pure, clean, transparent color. His impressionistic style reflects his enthusiasm for rich and textured settings. His ideas are formulated from sketches, observations and other paintings he’s done. Sometimes the original concepts result from plain air painting, sometimes from just plain daydreaming. The end product is an extension of himself rather than a refinement of facts. Emotion and imagination combine to form art that Burt calls “Imaginationscapes.”
“When I first met this wonderful medium, I wanted to be in control at all times. I was afraid to take risks, and the results were disastrous. I ruined many sheets of paper, and I was not having fun. I finally learned to let the paint do what it wanted in large parts of the painting and to leave it alone. Now, I’m afraid to not take risks, and I’m rewarded frequently with beautiful accidents when I least expect them. . . . This beautiful lady called watercolor has a mind of her own, but she will perform miracles if you let her.” – Dan Burt
Dan has conducted workshops and given painting demonstrations all across the U.S. and central Italy. He has won over ninety awards in national, regional and state juried exhibitions. His work has been included in various books and magazines. He was elected to the board of directors of the American Watercolor Society for 1997 and 1998. He served on the juries of selection for the 129th Annual American Watercolor Society International Exhibition in New York, NY, and the 78th Annual National Watercolor Society Exhibition in Fullerton, California.
His work is in numerous public and private collections, including his own book, You Can Paint Vibrant Watercolors, published in 1999. “I am a great fan of Dan Burt’s paintings. Having seen them in person, a book can’t really show the vibrancy and energy of his work. In spite of that, this book gives the reader a real insight to his talent and technique.” – Suzanne Hetzel (Dragonfly Watercolors)
He is an elected signature member of: American Watercolor Society – National Watercolor Society –Audubon Artist – Watercolor West – Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society – The Transparent Watercolor Society – TX Watercolor Society
